Introducing Shenandoah Chefalo, award-winning author, sought-after speaker, and trauma-informed coach and consultant who penned the book, “Garbage Bag Suitcase” about her young life in the foster care system, as well as an e-book entitled “Setting Your Vision and Defining Your Goals”. Her upcoming book “Hiking for Stillness” lays out a plan to overcome and address personal trauma by using and exploring the methods that she developed for herself.
She travels internationally helping transform organizations by teaching them how they can improve their workplace, performance, and overall enjoyment. Her tested and proven style of trauma-informed coaching includes a focus on resilience which she feels is a necessary skill for all to learn.
She is passionate about serving her clients, family, and community. She does so by helping organizations improve their workplaces and performance by teaching sustainable, trauma-informed methods, and by telling her story and educating the public about the grim realities of a life that she had always tried to hide.
Shenandoah experienced a dysfunctional childhood with neglectful, drug and alcohol addicted parents. This eventually landed her in the foster system where she endured numerous moves in the middle of the night with just minutes to pack, multiple changes in schools, hunger, cruelty, and loneliness.

The Foundation delivers Books to Royal Oak Middle School, Royal Oak High School and Churchill Community Center
in 2022-2023!
We are very proud to be able to provide books to our media centers/learning commons at Royal Oak Middle School, Royal Oak High School, and Churchill Community Education Center.
Thanks to a very generous donation from the Royal Oak Schools Foundation, ROMS, ROHS, and Churchill
Community High School were able to receive a total of $25,000 worth of new books to add to their learning
commons.
ROMS and ROHS both received $11,000 and Churchill received $3,000, using the following process for the book purchases:
All schools developed plans to collect teacher and student feedback regarding the types of books that they felt were needed. Teachers in all content areas were able to make recommendations.
Special topics were identified as areas of need, providing books on careers, biographies, environments, countries, cultures, sports, mental health, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
More books in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion, along with a focus on identifying more social-emotional learning books were featured to add to the learning commons for all students and staff.
In total, 1,320 new books were purchased for the secondary schools. Our staff and students are very grateful
for the donation from the Foundation and look forward to having the opportunity to engage with the new
books in their schools.

The Foundation delivers Literacy in 2021-2022!
Our 2021 Literacy Project, delivered books for reading pleasure, to our Pre-K, Kindergarten, and Grades 1-5th grader classrooms at the start of the 2021 School Year! The Foundation continues to be grateful to all supporters and donors for their continued cooperation in making this project possible. We are specifically grateful to those that participated in our Golf Outing, the Farmers Market Haul, and the Friends of the Foundation Campaign.
2021-2022 Literacy Project Success!
The Literacy Project for 2021 provided reading level appropriate books to all Royal Oak students Developmental-K through 5th Grade for their reading engagement and enjoyment. The project was planned for the 2020-2021 school year, but distribution was delayed due to the pandemic. We were pleased and excited to move the program forward at the beginning of the current 2021-2022 School Year!
The project was made possible through the Foundation’s fundraising efforts. The Foundation continues to be grateful to all supporters and donors for their continued cooperation in making this project possible. We are specifically grateful to those that participated in our Golf Outing, the Farmers Market Haul, and the Friends of the Foundation Campaign. These activities were able to fund this amazing project.
Funding alone could not have made the project possible. Many Foundation board members and volunteers worked to organize, pack, and distribute the books for over 2,500 students. We coordinated with the ROPL for their assistance and they delivered! Source flyers & "Get a Library Card!" material for all grade appropriate books were packed with our tote bags home! The ROSF is also grateful for the collaboration with the Royal Oak School District Curriculum Coordinator and Reading Specialist for their recommendations & purchasing power for these books for the kids. Thank you all again for being a part of our enriching the lives of our students!

ROYAL OAK SCHOOLS FOUNDATION AND ROYAL OAK DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY THANK ROYAL OAK SCHOOLS EMPLOYEES FOR 2020 EFFORT WITH A GIFT
2020 had been a tough year by any measure. But imagine being a teacher, or school employee during 2020. Shifting from in class learning to e-learning in a matter of weeks, keeping students safe when they returned to the classroom, feeding children who miss their daily school lunch, pivoting and informing thousands of students of the changing schedule and agenda. It is an effort that deserves recognition.
The Royal Oak Schools Foundation is providing a holiday gift of $30 in Downtown Dollars partially funded by the Royal Oak Downtown Development Authority to over 600 Royal Oak Schools employees to show our appreciation of their extra effort this year educating and supporting Royal Oak Schools Students. “We asked some of the teachers what they needed this holiday season” said Scott Brown, current President of the Royal Oak Schools Foundation, “they said that they would like to cook one less meal or have one less present to buy ... take something off their plate so they could enjoy their reduced free time” While brainstorming possible gift ideas, a board member suggested the DDA’s Downtown Dollars program. For $20, you can purchase $30 in Downtown Dollars to be spent at any of the participating Downtown Royal Oak businesses. The DDA funds the additional $10 as part of their program. It was an opportunity to reward our teachers and school employees for their efforts and help our Downtown retailers during a particularly difficult year. Each employee will be receiving $30 to spend at participating downtown Royal Oak merchants on whatever they choose, a meal, a gift, a hairstyling, a yoga class ... even a dog grooming. The possibilities are endless in Downtown Royal Oak. Thanks to each Royal Oak Schools teacher, para-professional, psychologist, counselor, social worker, occupational therapist, physical therapist, speech therapist, custodian, maintenance, building secretary and central office staff member will receive an email from the Foundation and the Authority rewarding them with a download of $30 in Downtown Dollars as a small token of our thanks and recognition of their efforts this year While the Royal Oak Downtown Development Authority and The Royal Oak Schools Foundation made this gift possible, funds for this gift were raised this summer during the Foundation’s “Farmers Market Haul” program which delivered fresh vegetables directly to doorsteps during the pandemic. So really, it’s a gift from all the residents to the teachers and staff of Royal Oak Schools. |

ROSF 2020-Donates $12,000 to Royal Oak Youth Assistance
ROYA has been an important safety net in our community for years. COVID-19 has tested their ability to care for our school community with so many additional families in need. The Royal Oak Schools Foundation (ROSF) initially donated $6000 at the onset of the crisis to provide Royal Oak Youth Assistance with the necessary funds to make it through the school year. As summer is now upon us the need has not slowed so we have made an additional $6000 donation to ROYA to help get them through the summer. In COVID, the great need of ASSISTANCE stood out. ROSF donated $12,000, over the year for the benefit of our kids, their families and our school system!
